PhotoShine 3.45 allows users to place their photos into 700 different templates (the trial limits you to 102). The quality of the templates varies greatly; some look pretty nice and could conceivably be printed and framed for display. Others...not so much.

Whether or not all of the templates were to our liking, we have to give the program a big thumbs up for its ease of use. You can easily load photos from your computer into the program and adjust them so that they are properly centered within the template. With many of the templates you can use multiple photos.

PhotoShine 3.45 offers limited photo editing capabilities: users can make a photo black and white or "old" (a poorly rendered, greenish version of sepia), or give it a sketched look. All of the editing functions are easy to locate and use.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 discards the "Manual" and "Auto" modes from the previous Alpha games by offering the player three different playing styles known as "isms". The standard playing style, A ism (or Z ism in Japan), is based on the previous Alpha games, in which the player has a three level Super Combo gauge with access to several Super Combo moves. X ism is a simple style based on Super Street Fighter II Turbo, in which the player has a single level Super Combo gauge and access to a single but powerful Super Combo move. The third style, V ism (or "variable" style), is a unique style that allows the player to perform custom combos similar to the ones in Street Fighter Alpha 2. In X ism, players cannot air block nor use Alpha Counters. The controls for several actions has been modified from previous Alpha games. Street Fighter Alpha 3 has a total of 34 characters, four of which become unlocked only after you play through the game's various modes. The alumni from Street Fighter Alpha 2 are joined by four new fighters: Karin Kanzuki, Rainbow Mika, Juli, and Juni. However, only Karin and R. Mika can be considered truly new since both Juli and Juni have moves and animations derived from Cammy. For Street Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom also brought back old favorites like Guile, E. Honda, Blanka, Balrog, Dee Jay, and Fei Long. In an effort to give the game detail beyond any of the previous Street Fighter Alphas, Capcom has given each character a unique ending. Street Fighter Alpha 3 employs the ism system as a method of establishing balance and strategy. X ism, A ism, and V ism determine moves and attributes that carry their own pros and cons. The isms are imbued with advantages and limitations so you will need to discover which mode fits your fighting style most. For instance, the advantage of X ism is that it has the highest damage rating, but you can't air block or ground recover. A ism, on the other hand, is the mode most players have become accustomed to since the premiere of Street Fighter Alpha. The "A" in the name represents Alpha, where abilities such as air blocking, air and ground recoveries, taunts, a three tiered super meter, and Alpha counters have all become the de facto expectation. V ism stands for "variable" mode and is by far the most difficult mode to master in Street Fighter Alpha 3. With V ism, you have the ability to activate Alpha 2 style custom combos. Aside from the various pros and cons of each ism, there are also a few moves that are ism specific. All of these considerations factor into choosing the right ism for your fighting style.

Capcom might have had a spotless game had it not overlooked one important aspect of Street Fighter Alpha 3: game balance. While it's important to sport a large and diverse roster (34 characters in all), it is also key to make sure that no one character's move or combo can be abused to spoil the versus game. This, unfortunately, is Street Fighter Alpha 3's biggest problem. Characters such as Rolento or Zangief all have techniques that can be exploited to make a versus game extremely frustrating. For example, Rolento nullifies the brilliance of the guard crush system simply by nature of his attacks (his normal attacks do incredible guard meter damage). Other problems include characters who are ranked fourth tier or worse simply because their moves have such low priority that they're altogether useless. Throw in the volatile world tour creation system, and you have a fighting game rife with gameplay exploits. Even so, most Capcom fans will be delighted with Street Fighter Alpha 3 simply because the home version is so over the top with bonus modes and extra characters. We can only hope that Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the first step for Capcom in a trend to make console games exceed their arcade predecessors.

NTI CD & DVD Maker 7 Titanium Suite software comes on a single CD and automatically launches the main install menu when inserted into a computer. We first installed the software on our Sony VAIO Laptop (PCV-K23) to check out some of the features. The installation menu allows users to install CD & DVD-Maker™ 7, Home Video-Maker and NTI's DVD Playback software separately. Since our laptop lacked a DVD burner, we also tested the software on our Sony Vaio (PCV-RZ22G) desktop machine, which gave us more resources. In both cases, the installation was simple and went without a hitch. The software comes on a single install CD. Each of the three items listed in the install menu must be installed separately or they will not be enabled in the main menu. The package also includes a QuickStart Guide that briefly explains how to use each of the various applications included with this suite of programs.

NTI CD and DVD Maker (NewTech Infosystems, Inc.) have released their new CD & DVD-Maker™ 7 Titanium Suite which includes nine programs (CD & DVD-Maker Platinum™, Home Video-Maker™, Backup NOW!®, DVD Playback software, DVD Fit™, FileCD™, Jewelcase Maker™, Wave Editor™ and Music Cafe™). When using the Mixed Mode CD format, the first session can contain up to 98 audio tracks and second session contains the data track. These discs offer excellent compatibility with both audio-only players as well as CDROM drives in computers.

The Video programs are used to create Video CDs and Super VCDs. NTI's Cinematic Video offers users a simple way to spice up video by having the software create transitions and effects on the original content. HomeVideo-Maker is a powerful application designed to capture, edit and create video discs with support for menus and sub menus. The best part about this program is NTI makes it easy to preview the disc to see how the menu system will work before burning the disc. The HomeVideo-Maker software has some excellent features that are quite intuitive. Also included is the DVD Fit application, which is designed to automatically compress video to fit on a single DVD in cases where the source files are much larger than the target disc capacity. NTI also threw in their DVD player.

The Photo programs include Photo Disc, Slideshow VCD, Slideshow SVCD, and Cinematic Slideshow™. Photo Discs simply include a series of JPEG files and are compatible with newer DVD players and all computers with CDROM drives. The VCD and SVCD Slideshow programs are designed to create video from a series of still images. Background audio can also be added to the video for a custom presentation. The Cinematic Slideshow allows user to takes a series of photos and create a wonderful presentation. Once the disc is burned, the user can select the JewelCase Maker application for either standard (12 cm) discs or Mini (8 cm) discs.

The Backup programs includes Files & Folders and Disc Image. Selecting launches NTI's Backup NOW! 4 application, a comprehensive backup/restore program that allows users to easily select files for archiving. The software automatically spans the data to multiple discs if required. The program can compare archived files to identify differences and can even backup and restore to a remote server.

The Copy program is capable of duplicating CD or DVD (non-copy protected) media to or from a disc or image. This is a great utility for making multiple copies of a disc. We used it to duplicate the kids DVD videos for family.

Performance

We sampled most of the programs included with the CD & DVD-Maker™ 7 Titanium Suite (there are many) including the backup tools for CD and DVD. Much of our focus was on the HomeVideo-Maker application that allows users to quickly create a DVD complete with menus. The quick preview capability was excellent and saves users time when making their own custom movies. We connected our JVC MiniDV camcorder to our PC using a IEEE-1394 cable and the software immediately recognized the device. Transferring our home video to the hard drive for editing was a breeze and the HomeVideo-Maker software worked well. We were able to quickly create a DVD of our favorite moments.

Another great set of applications is the Slideshow VCD and Slideshow SVCD that allows users to take a series of still pictures and create an impressive video presentation with background music targeting VCD or SVCD. The playing time for each still picture is user adjustable. The Cinematic Slideshow is a great way to spice up what would normally be a simple series of slides with music. The software automatically creates movement through the still pictures, which produces an interesting cinematic effect.

The DVD and CD backup application was also very useful and easy to use. We took some of our custom home videos of the kids and were able to quickly make duplicates for the family. Making CD copies of our VCD and SVCD Slideshows was just as easy.

Conclusion

The CD & DVD-Maker™ 7 Titanium Suite offers a powerful set of tools for both CD and DVD media. Users can quickly capture and edit video, create music discs, listen to MP3s, watch videos, backup data and much more all with this one product. The user interface is simple and the product achieves great results based on what we have tested. What is most amazing is that the complete software package is available for under $80. Army Men II, released in 1999 is the second game in the long running Army Men video game franchise from The 3DO Company and a direct sequel to 1998s Army Men. The game differs from the first one in that it has battles in both the "real world" and the "plastic world." It is also the first to introduce the concept of portals between our world and their world. A topic that was expanded on in later games.

Your AI isn't smart enough to hold fire when a friendly unit blocks his line of sight. Imagine Sarge heading up a tank column and driving into enemy territory. Suddenly you spot the enemy tanks. You open fire. The guy behind you isn't smart enough to move a few feet to the side. Instead he begins to shoot at the enemy but hits you instead! You really don't have time to position everyone individually. It would be nice if you didn't have to worry about being killed by your own guys.

The next stage in the game involves Sarge finding a missing colonel in a tropical area. There, he finds that soldiers from all four armies have banded together in what is called "the Cult". Later it is revealed that colonel has gone mad and is the leader of this cult. He escapes through a portal and is followed by Sarge into the front yard of somebody's house. It was there that Sarge faced suicide bombers, roaches, and various members of the cult; eventually, Sarge had to take out the colonel himself.

The next four levels involve a fight against scientists who work for the Tan Army. It starts in a tropical area where Sarge again finds the old man and engages in a battle against zombies (which are created by the infamous Insane Grey Doctor, Dr. Madd). There Sarge has to destroy the generators which are necessary to keep the zombie mold factory running. Next Sarge finds himself in a desert where he must take out other scientists. He then goes through another portal which takes him to a hobby table in a garage. There he must stop several scientists from escaping back into the plastic world. He goes through a portal and emerges in what appears to be a tan base. A forested, middle-of-nowhere type of place, it is the epitome of the levels involving the enemy scientists. Here there are zombies, suicide bombers, and another set of scientists that have to be assassinated.

Afterwards, Sarge is back in the desert. This time he finds himself at a tan fortress. After evading a massive wave of angry soldiers, Sarge must again rescue the blue spy. He then has to find a key leading to a weapon of mass destruction located in the center of the level. After that he has to get to the weapon and destroy it before the tans use it. When he is done there, he must find another portal out of there.

He finds himself located in a child's bedroom which is crawling with tan soldiers. It is in here that he hunts down Major Mylar on a fortress-like playset and takes him out. In the closing movie, the greens swoop in, taking out the remaining tans and enjoying a major victory for the Green Army. On top of a nightstand or dresser, General Plastro can be seen spying on them. Under his breath, he "thanks" the greens for getting rid of Mylar, and "encourages" them to enjoy their victory for now. Laughing maniacally, he says that he something special planned for next time.
