Max
Payne 2
The Fall of Max Payne is a third person shooter video game developed by Remedy
Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Rockstar Vienna for the Xbox and
PlayStation 2 and published by Rockstar Games. The game is a sequel to Max
Payne and is followed by Max Payne 3. It was released for Microsoft Windows on
October 15, 2003, for Xbox on November 25, 2003, and for the PlayStation 2 on
December 2, 2003.
In Max Payne 2, the player controls Max Payne, a
former DEA agent for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and a fugitive
framed for murder of his best friend by the corrupted agent, B.B., in New York
City during the events of Max Payne. Two years after the events of the first
game, Max has cleared his name and is now an NYPD detective. He reunites with
Mona Sax, whom he met in the previous game, as they set out to resolve a
conspiracy of death and betrayal, finding the Inner Circle in the center of it
all.
Max Payne 2 is a direct sequel to the original
and picks up after the events of that game. Max, now a detective and wearier
than ever of the world, once again has his hands full as he finds himself
hopelessly attached to the lovely Mona Sax, a murder suspect and part of a
bigger plot that ties in to Max's own dark past. There are tons of references
and parallels to the original story. Fans will undoubtedly be pleased by some
of the nudging and winking, though someone starting off with Max Payne 2 would
probably feel rather left out, despite the presence of an optional cutscene
that summarizes what happened leading up to Max Payne 2. Still, this is a
surprisingly complex narrative for a game, irrespective of the genre.
There are some interesting changes in the
arsenal, speaking of which. The grenade launcher is gone, but you now have the
MP5, a versatile assault rifle with a short range scope. There are so many
fully automatic weapons, though, that a few get lost in the shuffle. You have
the Ingrams, three assault rifles, and two machine guns. You'll forget the
Ingram ever existed once you start wielding the Kalashnikov AK-47. Each round
does some vicious damage, and you can cut someone down with only a couple
bullets if you aim right. But they can also cut you down with it too. Since
many of the bad guys camp positions waiting for you to appear, you'll find
yourself enabling Bullet Time before bursting through a lot of doors. Save
often, folks. Although AI difficulty adjusts somewhat to your skill level, an
AK is an AK and it's hard to not put some serious hurt on someone. Another nice
tweak is dual Desert Eagles. I didn't use the single style Desert Eagle in the
first game much, because of its slow rate of fire and smaller clip. Here,
though, they pack a satisfying punch that, in combination with some Bullet
Time, will allow you to put some hurt on a much better armed enemy. Plus, with
the 2.0 mode, you get those wicked fast reloads.
